When World Sports Betting signed up to sponsor the Eastern Cape Poly challenge in 2016, it was always going to be an exciting series. This sentiment was made true when Home Town Hero, Gogetthesherrif went on to win the first 2 legs comfortably and put trainer Jacques Strydom in a great position to take home the R250 000 bonus offered by WSB for winning all 3 legs. Sadly, GGTS lost in the 3rd leg in front of a devastated crowd but still managed to win the series overall and take home the R50 000 consolation prize.

But there was more to the series than just racing… Always the innovators in finding new ways of improving the overall racing experience, WSB introduced live betting during all 3 legs. Nadine Rapson along with co-presenters were each given R5000 by WSB for each race day in the series and they were given the opportunity to take advantage of WSB’s top prices on the horses in the fields. All winnings would be donated to the Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit (ECHCU). Although the fields were though and picking winners never easy, the presenting team managed to secure just over R30 000 throughout the series.

“This was always about the ECHCU” said Ryno Du Plessis, national marketing manager for WSB. “We have always been a brand that believes in giving back and this time we chose to do more than just donate, we made it fun!”

Megan Hope, manager of the ECHU was on hand on all 3 days and was proud to show off the new horse trailer she had already bought at the 3rd leg. “The Money will go to good use and we are so grateful to WSB for coming up with this great idea. The ECHCU does great work but we rely on good hearted people to make it possible, and WSB has been fantastic” said Megan.
