It’s Time To Shoot For The Stars
June 21, 2023
For the next week and a half, experts from all over the country will try to tell you how the 2023 Durban July will pan out.

Eighteen of the country’s finest thoroughbreds were announced to participate in the 2023 Durban July at Greyville Racecourse at an event in Durban yesterday. Pundits nationwide will now try to analyse how they feel the race will go. So, I’ve decided to take you, our valued readers, through a few pointers.

Where will the pace come from?

Three horses in this race have done well from the front in the past, Time Flies, Rain In Holland and Dave The King. They all have galloping ability!

From the draw of 3, it does look like Time Flies will go to the front, Rain In Holland does have good early gate speed, but with there being so much on the line, many would believe that jockey S’manga Khumalo will try and save her up for later on in the race from Draw 17.

Dave The King was also very impressive when running from the front in the Daily News 2000, and from his midfield-draw of 10, he should also be near the front of this contest; it will be exciting to see if he does commit because many believe that he may be able to maintain the gallop throughout.

Dependent on how fast they go in the Durban July main race will determine the outcome; if they go too slow, this can cause a lot of traffic problems and horses coming from behind the top 8 will find traffic problems.

Current race favourite See It Again looks like he will have the run of the race from draw 7; it does look like jockey Piere Strydom can place him wherever he wants to place him to be placed, and on paper, the only thing that can beat See It Again is bad luck!

Trainer Michael Roberts was pleased with the draw of his main race favourite, See It Again, and the cameras spotted him jumping for joy.

Speaking to the media yesterday, trainer Justin Snaith said that he is very happy and confident with his runners in the race and said that this is the first year where all his runners have equal chances, and he hopes that everything goes according to plan.

Also speaking to the media yesterday was trainer Mike De Kock who said that both of his horses were doing great at home, and he is very happy with draws.
