cycling preview

Stage 15 of La Vuelta a España starts in Pamplona and ends a 158.5 kilometres later in Lekunberri.  There are no massive climbs, but the profile is lumpy and the breakaway is once again favourite to take the honours.

STAGE 14 WRAP

After a terrible Stage 13 where he lost 27 minutes and dropped out of contention for the overall win, Remco Evenepoel showed great character to get into the breakaway and ultimately ride away with a victory over Romain Bardet who finished a minute and 12 seconds behind him.  There was no significant General Classification action and David de la Cruz led what remained of the peloton over the line some 8 minutes 21 behind.

JERSEY UPDATE

Sepp Kuss retains his 1 minute 37 seconds lead over Primoz Roglic with Vingegaard a further 7 seconds behind.  Jumbo-Visma have a clean sweep of the podium at this stage.  Juan Ayuso is the nearest challenger 2.37 behind Sepp Kuss.  Kuss is now the 4/9 favourite with Vingegaard 32/10 and Roglic 11/2, you can get 33/1 Ayuso.

Kaden Groves remains in control of the Green Jersey and he is now priced at 1/5 although Remco Evenepoel has moved into 6/1 given his focus has now changed.

The really big change took place in the King of the Mountains race where Remco Evenepoel has now moved into the lead by 24 points over Michael Storer who started the stage as the King of the Mountains favourite.  Evenepoel is now 4/10, Vingegaard and Storer 7/1 and you can get 20/1 and better the balance.

Jumbo-Visma now lead the Team Classification by over 10 minutes from UAE and they are 1/5 with UAE Prices at 5/1.

THE ROUTE

There is a Cat 3 climb and a couple of Cat 2’s with the final climb coming close to the finish after which we have 8 kilometres of downhill to the end of the race.  This isn’t the sort of stage where riders can do serious damage to each other in the battle for the Red Jersey and with Jumbo-Visma looking so strong it would be a very brave man to even try.

STAGE 15 BETTING – Click here to bet

Remco Evenepoel 8/1

Andreas Kron 9/1

Filippo Ganna 12/1

Oier Lazkano 12/1

Romain Gregoire 14/1

22/1 and better the balance

PREDICTION

I expect Jumbo-Visma to patrol the early stage and allow a large, but non-threatening break to go up the road and I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to put one of their non-GC riders in it to possibly ride for the stage.

These breakaway stages are always tough to pick a winner and I am going to go two riders towards the top end of the betting boards.  Andreas Kron has impressed in this Vuelta and while he battles in the very high mountains this is the sort of stage that suits him.  Ineos haven’t had a great race although Ganna did win the Time Trial and it is Ganna who I think they should be sticking into the break and backing for the win here.  He is climbing brilliantly and can sprint as well.
