cycling preview

The Vuelta a España finishes on Sunday with a 101.1-kilometre flat stage ending in what is almost guaranteed to be a sprint in Madrid.  We take a look at the stage from a betting angle.

STAGE 20 WRAP

The break ended up fighting out the stage and in the end, it was veteran Wout Poels who timed his move to perfection with the winning line coming just in time to hold off Remco Evenepoel for the win.

A large break had gone clear and Jumbo-Visma were content to let it go and ride tempo on the front of the bunch, a luxury they could afford with not only the leader Kuss but also the 2nd and 3rd place riders on their roster.  It was a pity that the General Classification race wasn’t a lot closer as with more teams in contention Stage 20 could well have been a classic.

JERSEY UPDATE

Most the jerseys have been decided barring accident and any betting interest on this stage will be on the stage itself.   There is still a mathematical chance that Evenepoel could take the Green Jersey from Kaden Groves, but Groves is a 1/100 favourite which tells you just how unlikely that is.

THE ROUTE

The stage is short, flat and ends with 9 laps of a 5.8km circuit and while we should get a small break go clear at some point there is little doubt that the sprinters teams will work together to reel it in.

25/1 and better the balance

PREDICTION

I have backed Kaden Groves a lot in this Vuelta and he delivered for me in the early stages, but has had bad luck or bad positioning in the last few stages which he hasn’t contested.  He is a worthy favourite to get it right, but I am going to have a go at Filippo Ganna who has looked very good in the sprints, a skill I never knew he had coming into this Vuelta.

I can picture the scenario now as the riders hurtle towards the finish and Geraint Thomas leads out his Ineos teammate (remember how he led Cavendish out in the Giro) and Ganna hits the front and holds on for the win.

Watch out for Evenepoel trying to get into the break or trying to steam a march on the peloton in the last couple of km.

Suggested Bet:  Filippo Ganna win at 11/2
