ENGLAND

England lost their opening match against New Zealand by 9 wickets.

In their second World Cup game against Bangladesh, England lost the toss and were sent out to bat.

England had a strong opening partnership that produced 115 runs before the first wicket fell. They maintained their momentum until the last ten overs, during which wickets tumbled. They scored 364/9 in their 50 overs and both Bairstow and Root achieved half-centuries, while Malan top scored with a massive 140 runs.

England’s bowlers came out hot taking four wickets in the first 10 overs. They kept the pressure on dismissing Bangladesh for only 227 runs in the 48th over and ultimately winning the game by a margin of 137 runs. Reece Topley delivered an outstanding performance, taking four wickets in his 10 overs.

AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan lost their opening match to Bangladesh by 6 wickets.

In their most recent clash against India, Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat.

They started slowly but gradually picked up the pace, with significant contributions from their middle-order batsmen. Notably, Shahidi and Omarzai both achieved half-centuries. Afghanistan accumulated a total of 272 runs in their allotted 50 overs and lost 8 wickets.

India began their innings strongly, and Afghanistan struggled to cope with the early pressure. India comfortably chased down Afghanistan’s total of 272 runs in the 35th over, with the only two wickets being taken, both by Rashid Khan.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

The last time these two teams faced each other was in the 2019 World Cup when England secured a comfortable 150-run victory over Afghanistan.

England 1/9

Afghanistan 5/1

Suggested Bet:  Afghanistan to be over 25.5 runs at the first dismissal at 17/20

In the previous game, Afghanistan’s openers demonstrated their ability to stay at the crease for several overs and accumulate runs. I expect a similar conservative approach against England.

Suggested Bet:  Joe Root to be top batter at 5/2

In his first two games of the World Cup, Root has scored 77 and 82 runs, demonstrating that he is in excellent form. Given this form and the relatively weaker opposition in Afghanistan, Root looks set to help himself to more runs.
