United Rugby Championship Betting Preview, 5 February
February 4, 2022

We take a look at the two URC Rugby matches featuring South Africa teams and suggest a bet in each.

Let’s start with a look at the Outright Markets in the United Rugby Championship where Leinster are still trading as strong favourites at 5/10 ahead of fellow Irish side, Munster at 5/1.  The Irish teams completed the top 3 in the betting with Ulster 13/2 and you can get 20/1 and better the balance.

From a South African point of view the Bulls and Sharks are trading at 22/1, the Stormers 70/1 and the Lions out to a massive 500/1.

BLUE BULLS v LIONS

The Bulls currently sit a lowly 13th on the table with just 2 wins in their 7 matches.  The Bulls were too strong for the Lions last week winning 34-10, but the week before that they lost to a late Stormers try to go down 26-30 at home.

The Lions sit 1 position behind the Bulls on the table down in 14th spot, level on points and also with two wins from 7 games.  Prior to the big defeat to the Bulls at home, the Lions had gone down by 10 points to the Sharks in a high scoring encounter also in Johannesburg and back in December they beat the Stormers 37-19 in Cape Town.

Blue Bulls 1/16

Draw 55/1

Lions 13/1

Handicap:  Bulls (-18.5)

Suggested Bet:  Half-time Handicap, Bulls (-8.5) at 9/10

I am expecting the Bulls to be far too strong for the Lions and they will no doubt hunt the bonus point early.  There is always a chance though that they will step off the gas and I am a bit weary of the big 18.5 point handicap and will settle for a quick start and hopefully collect my winnings at half-time.

STORMERS v SHARKS

The Sharks are the top placed South African team currently in 10th, but like all South African teams they do have a game or two in hand over those above them.  They sit two points ahead of the Stormers in 12th and travel to Cape Town now looking to improve on a 22-22 draw with the Stormers in Durban last week.  It was a game where the Sharks looked in control for long periods only for ill-discipline to cost them in the home stretch.  Prior to that they had beaten the Lions 47-37 in Jo’burg and back in December beat the Bulls 30-16 in Durban.

The Stormers will be happy with a draw and a win away at the Sharks and the Bulls this past fortnight and they now return home where they will be looking for a massive step up from the 19-37 loss to the Lions in December.

 Stormers 27/20

Draw 22/1

Sharks 15/20

Handicap:  Stormers (+2.5)

Suggested Bet:  Sharks win at 15/20

I am keeping this simple and I am expecting a better performance by the Sharks and this time around I think they will close out the game.
